چکیده

In the Conclusion section of the above article its authors wrote, ‘‘ . . . contrary to the weeping hypothesis, however, the current analysis demonstrates that @after load is applied# lubricant fluid trapped between a rigid impermeable surface and a porouspermeable cartilage layer flows monotonically into the cartilage during contact creep; no fluid flow from the cartilage into the lubricant pool is observed . . . . @T#his result is in better agreement with the premise of the boosted lubrication theory of Walker et al. @1#’’ The article gives the duration of ‘‘contact creep’’ as .4 seconds for roughness similar to that of cartilage @2# and about 10 seconds for roughness 5 times as tall and 10 times longer in wavelength.

Experimental verification and theoretical prediction of cartilage interstitial fluid pressurization at an impermeable contact interface in confined compression.

Interstitial fluid pressurization has long been hypothesized to play a fundamental role in the load support mechanism and frictional response of articular cartilage. However, to date, few experimental studies have been performed to verify this hypothesis from direct measurements. The first objective of this study was to investigate experimentally the hypothesis that cartilage interstitial fluid...

Partial meniscectomy changes fluid pressurization in articular cartilage in human knees.

Partial meniscectomy is believed to change the biomechanics of the knee joint through alterations in the contact of articular cartilages and menisci. Although fluid pressure plays an important role in the load support mechanism of the knee, the fluid pressurization in the cartilages and menisci has been ignored in the finite element studies of the mechanics of meniscectomy. In the present study...

A cross-validation of the biphasic poroviscoelastic model of articular cartilage in unconfined compression, indentation, and confined compression.

The biphasic poroviscoelastic (BPVE) model was curve fit to the simultaneous relaxation of reaction force and lateral displacement exhibited by articular cartilage in unconfined compression (n=18). Model predictions were also made for the relaxation observed in reaction force during indentation with a porous plane-ended metal indenter (n=4), indentation with a nonporous plane ended metal indent...

Arthroscopic evaluation of cartilage degeneration using indentation testing--influence of indenter geometry.

BACKGROUND It has been suggested that the early onset of cartilage degeneration might be detected with a handheld indentation probe during knee arthroscopy, prior to any visible change on the articular surface. Collagen degradation has been considered as the first sign of cartilage degeneration. Therefore, it is important to consider the collagen network as a distinct constituent in the study o...

Creep behavior of the intact and meniscectomy knee joints.

The mechanical functions of the menisci may be partially performed through the fluid pressurization in articular cartilages and menisci. This creep behavior has not been investigated in whole knee joint modeling. A three-dimensional finite element knee model was employed in the present study to explore the fluid-flow dependent creep behaviors of normal and meniscectomy knees. The model included...
